It’s hard to say where an artist’s inspiration comes from. It can be something as simple as a color, a soft texture, or from a treasured memory that is close to your heart. For Lacy Gutierrez, owner and designer of Olive Mae Clothing, family memories always offer inspiration for her designs. Lacy has loving memories of shopping for buttons with her mother and grandmother at a button store in Dallas. Wandering through aisle after aisle of brightly colored buttons offered Lacy a time in her life where creativity was not only nurtured but also encouraged. Lacy takes great pride in knowing that every detail of her designs has been personally chosen for a reason. Choosing a button to include in a dress design may seem like a simple task, but not for an artist. The color has to be just right to compliment the soft tones in a romantic dress, or bright and fun to add the perfect amount of pop to a summer ensemble. The size is also taken into account as well as how the buttons are skillfully sewn into the material of the outfit. It is said that it takes ten thousand hours of practice to become proficient at a skill. Lacy has been sewing with her family since she was a young girl so it is easy to see where her level of artistry, love for design, and attention to detail stem from. She still finds joy in wandering the aisles of buttons, now with her own children, showing them all the brightly colored jars filled with buttons and inspiration, knowing that one day they to will fondly look back and remember going button shopping with mom.
