Nursing homes are charged with providing care to those who are not able to live without complete medical supervision. While there are many nursing homes that provide excellent care, there are some that are negligent or abusive when caring for their residents. Nursing home neglect and abuse, whether it’s financial, emotional, sexual or physical, can cause severe injuries and sometimes death. Knowing what to do if your loved one is a victim of nursing home abuse and neglect is vital to their present and future well-being. The Special Investigations Division of the House Government Reform Committee found that 30% of the nursing homes in the US had violations. A majority of the violations were due to inadequate medical treatment, malnutrition, dehydration, poor hygiene and sanitation, bedsores and preventable accidents. Detecting maltreatment may be difficult, but there are signs to look for such as: unexplained bruising or bleeding, significant changes in behavior, emotional withdrawal, bedsores, sudden financial changes and others. One of the most effective ways of preventing abuse is to make frequent visits to the resident if you are able, so that they have contact with the outside world.
