Truck accidents are far more likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities than an accident involving two regular vehicles. According to the National Institute of Traffic and Highway Safety almost three quarters of such injuries and deaths are suffered by those who are struck by a truck. In the past decade, truck safety has greatly improved. Truck accident injuries and fatalities can still occur because of a reckless truck driver or truck manufacturing issue. There are a few common types of truck accident injuries, some of which can be catastrophic and can take years to recover from, or cannot fully ever be recovered from. The most common types of injuries are back and neck injuries, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, broken bones, internal injuries, lacerations, rib and torso injuries, seat belt injuries. Since about a quarter of truck accidents result in some type of injury, it is highly likely that those who are victims of such accident injuries will experience one or more of these types of injuries. Back and neck injuries can include anything from minor neck pain, often referred to as whiplash, to dislocated spinal discs. Trauma to the spinal cord can cause permanent disability, and even minor injuries to this area can prevent victims from returning to their daily routines. Besides back and neck injuries, the most common type of truck accident injuries are head injuries. These include concussions, which range from minor to severe, unconsciousness, coma, and serious brain injuries, which may lead to a permanent loss of cognitive functions. Internal injuries include internal bleeding and ruptured organs, usually from blunt trauma, making these types of injuries difficult to treat.
