Tench is a medium-sized fish, heavy and full-bodied. It occurs in soft-bottomed lakes, in low-flow rivers and in lush vegetation. Tanches are rather shy fish, hiding among dense grasses. They feed on invertebrates, including pond snails and small pea mussels. In summer, males spawn, hunt females and fertilize eggs as soon as they have laid them in shallow algae or plant beds.
