You chose vinyl for its look, its style, and the fact that it is relatively low maintenance. However, it is not a set it and forget it solution. There are still things that you need to do to keep it looking like new and lasting a lifetime. Soapy water and a long-handled brush There are cleaning detergents out there for siding, but you can usually clean your siding with regular dish soap. A long-handled brush will help you reach into the seams, and the bristles will get into the textures of the siding to loosen up the dirt. Start from the bottom up and rinse from the top down, making sure not to miss any sections. Make sure the detergent you use rinses off completely. If allowed to dry on the siding, detergents can cause the siding to develop small cracks after it has been left to dry on the surface. Can I pressure wash? Yes, but read the directions for the washer before you use it. Also, hold the washing wand of the pressure level and aim it directly at the siding. Don’t angle it upwards. That can cause water to go under the siding. Mold and mildew If you have noticed that your siding is developing mold and mildew, you can make a mixture to spray your siding. A solution of 30% vinegar to 70% water should do the trick to loosen and eliminate the pesky stuff. You can also use any ammonia or vinegar-based glass cleaner. Residue from mulch If you have landscaping around your edifice, chances are you have mulch. If not rotated out periodically to prevent it, mulch throws off Artillery spores that attach themselves to any surface, including vinyl siding. Unfortunately, there is no known way to combat this spore short of replacing the mulch and affected siding. Call your installer for warranty information and other upkeep tips on how to keep your commercial vinyl siding looking like new.
