What is Qurbani in Islam?

What is Qurbani in Islam

Qurbani is the act of sacrificing a permissible animal as a devotion to Almighty Allah. This sacrifice is carried out during the annual festival of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). On the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims worldwide celebrate EId-al-adha, also known as Qurbani Eid.

Though Qurbani is considered as an act of devotion to Allah, its significance reaches far beyond that. The meat of Qurbani is usually distributed in three parts: One part for the less fortunate, one part for the neighbors and relatives, and one part for your family.

When you partake in giving Qurbani, you are ensuring that improvised people are receiving vital protein and nutrients. They can also enjoy the festival with the rest of us. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Never does its flesh reach Allah, nor its blood; instead, it is your taqwa that reaches Him.”

Why Do Muslims Give Qurbani?

Do you know how the ritual of Qurbani or sacrificing animals during Eid al-Adha came about? The ritual of Qurbani or sacrificing animals has its origins in the story of Prophet Ibrahim.  He had a dream where Allah commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail.

To prove his devotion to Allah, Ibrahim decided to perform the sacrifice, despite the immense pain it would bring him. However, Allah intervened and provided a ram to be sacrificed instead of Ismail. And that’s why Muslims continue giving Qurbani year after year – to remind ourselves to be obedient to  Allah’s will against all odds. It’s a powerful story of faith.

When is Eid-Al-Adha or Qurbani Eid 2024?

Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha or Qurbani every year on the 10th day of the Islamic month Dhul Hijjah. In 2024, Qurbani Day is expected to be on Wednesday, June 16th. The exact day of Qurbani is a matter of moon sighting.

After the Eid prayer in the morning, you can sacrifice a permissible animal such as a cow, goat, camel, etc as Qurbani. However, you have three days to carry out this ritual – the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. During this three-day period, you can perform the Qurbani sacrifice according to your convenience. So in 2024, Qurbani can be done on June 16th, 17th, or 18th.

The exact date may change a little based on when the new moon is sighted in different countries and regions. But most likely, Qurbani 2024 will fall on those three days in June.

Make this Eid unforgettable by sharing your blessings with those in need. Your generous donation can bring joy and hope to countless lives. Be a beacon of kindness this Eid.
