Exciting news! We joined numerous Latino organizations in signing a letter supporting Rep. Jimmy Gomez's bill to name the Los Angeles courthouse after the Mendez family. This significant bill, which honors the Mendez family's pivotal efforts to end legal segregation in schools, has just passed in the House of Representatives! Together, we celebrate this monumental achievement and the continued progress toward a more inclusive and just society. https://ow.ly/j3gn50RSCKO

Exciting news! Yesterday, UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) and our allies filed a Citizen Petition asking the FDA to require a safety warning on unfortified corn masa foods. Lack of folic acid in corn masa puts Latino families at higher risk of neural tube defects. Huge thanks to Laura MacCleery for her expertise and leadership on this issue and our partners, including March of Dimes, Spina Bifida Association of America, MomsRising.org, Healthy Food America, First Focus on Children, SER National, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC FEDERAL EXECUTIVES, Esperanza United, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Dr. Michael Feldman, Dr. Michael Blount, and Miss United States.
Proud to report that yesterday, we took a major step forward for the health of Latino families by filing a Citizen Petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on behalf of UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS) and our allies to require a safety warning on corn masa foods that lack fortification with folic acid. Folic acid fortification is routine in wheat flour. Because Latinos eat a lot of corn masa, this can expose Latino newborns to a higher risk of serious neural tube defects like spinal bifida and anencephaly (which is fatal). Fortifying a staple food is the least that companies could do, but even after UnidosUS and its allies spent years obtaining an FDA decision in 2016 to allow fortification, most companies didn’t bother, although doing so would have cost pennies. After more time politely asking the marketplace to put families first, yesterday we petitioned the FDA to create a label that would inform consumers and add market pressure to fortify foods. Half of all pregnancies are unintended, and because neural tube formation is very early in pregnancy and folate levels need to be high at the start of a pregnancy, starting to take supplements after finding out about a pregnancy comes too late. Fortification is the ideal policy. We were joined on the petition by leading organizations, including March of Dimes, @Spina Bifida Association, MomsRising.org, @Healthy Food America, @First Focus on Children, @SER National Inc., Balanced, @National Association of Hispanic Federal Executives, @Esperanza United, and @Latino Justice PRLDEF, as well as global fortification experts and neurosurgeons Dr.’s @Michael Feldman and @Jeffrey Blount, and by Miss United States @Addison Hadley, who has made this important issue part of her work. This would not have happened without the support of our fearless leader, Janet Murguía, and the incredibly skilled and thoughtful leadership of our own Umailla Fatima. https://lnkd.in/eUUyWr5C

When it comes to economic equity, we believe our country's most valued resource should have access to foods with the nutritional value needed to create strong and healthy families and individuals. Our CEO, Ignacio Salazar, was featured in this press release on why corn masa and flour products need to be reviewed by the FDA. Check it out: https://ow.ly/mPfc50RuYw5
